Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. While our independence has been celebrated every year since then, it wasn't until 1870 that congress made it an unpaid holiday. In 1931, congress changed it to a paid holiday.
Independence Day is often celebrated with fireworks, parades, carnivals, and political speeches.
