Mahashivratri, also known as the Great Night of Shiva, is a night most sacred to Lord Shiva. Activities include fasting, an all-night vigil, and the burning/offering offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves.
There are various accounts on why this night is sacred to Shiva. On one account, the world was facing destruction, so the Goddess Parvati worshipped her husband Shiva to save it. Shiva granted her request and saved the world. Shiva would also bless those that worshipped him as she worshipped him on that night.
