Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, was founded in 1866 by General John Murray in Waterloo, New York. His friend General John A. Logan helped to nationalize this holiday
At first, Memorial Day was a holiday to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers during the Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to commemorate all of the men and women who have died for their country while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
