Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent. It's a time of fasting and repentance. With some exceptions, the Eastern Orthodox Churches do not celebrate this holiday.
On this day, ashes from the burned palm branches from last years' Easter are marked on foreheads usually in the form of a cross. The ashes signify repentance and mourning.
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
