Mardi Gras is a French term that literally translates to Fat Tuesday. It's also known as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, and Dollar day.
Mardi Gras occurs on the day before Lent (the day before Ash Wednesday). Historically, it has been a day of praying for forgiveness and the absolution of sins before Lent. Today, a large part of the holiday is a final day of feasting and partying before the fasting and discipline during the upcoming 40 days of Lent.
