Pentecost Sunday is the celebration of the descension of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. Pentecost literally means fifty days, as this event occurred 50 days after Jesus' resurrection.
This day is also known as WhitSun. The meaning of whit is either thought to be (1) white due to the white clothing that was often worn, or (2) whit which was an Old English word for Spirit.
